Contador Wanarua Reacts to Microsoft’s Skype Takeover

| May 11, 2011

May 11, 2011 ( This is a strategic asset and a defensive move by Microsoft. I was thinking that if Microsoft can integrate Skype and put it on Windows 8, it will offer them an advantage. Such a move would propel them in the growing tablet market. Many fans of Skype that I talked to said their hope was that the monstrous tentacles of Microsoft will not crush its independent spirit.

On my side it will be interesting to see how Microsoft tries to make users pay more for the service in order to recoup some of the money spent on this purchase. How will the charges be spread to consumers remain to be seen. On another front, I do not think the deal make sense at all as a financial investment for Microsoft. There’s no way Microsoft is going to generate enough revenue and profit from Skype to compensate the purchase and on a long term it may be consequential.

However, one thing that comes to my mind is that Skype has so many users and makes it an attractive deal as compared to other alternatives. Skype is widely used by the more technologically sophisticated consumers. All in all let us see how Skype will perform under Microsoft as compared to the previous owners.

Contador Wanarua believes that Skype would “create the future of real-time communications so people can easily stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues anywhere in the world”. As part of the deal, Skype will now become a new division within Microsoft.
