In fact a research article published in the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health pointed out that between 1989 and 2009 the number of women who chose to hire midwives has consistently increased with 2009 being with the peak at 8.1%.
“Pregnant women today are much more capable of making an informed choice, than they were a few years ago. Technological advancements have drastically controlled the risks involved during delivery. They’re well qualified professional women who’ve either completed a bachelor’s course in midwifery or have completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing along with a graduate diploma course in midwifery,” say Kelly Langford and Jan Ireland who run MAMA- a team of practitioners and volunteers who offer pregnancy, birth and prenatal help to mothers in and around Victoria, Australia.
Midwives are also trained in recognizing complications that may occur during delivery and also to carry emergency measures. When delivering in a hospital, midwives work alongside obstetricians and other medical practitioners during birth. Their role extends to caring for the newborn and helping new mums in feeding. The only task that they cannot undertake is to perform operations including C-Sections.
