OHIO: Oakwood Student Helps School Go Green

October 22, 2013 (Powerhomebiz.com) A local student is making a positive impact this fall at his school and in the community. Connor Morris, an 8th grader at Oakwood Junior High School, was concerned about the environmental impact of the use of plastic and Styrofoam by the school district.

Across the country, landfills are filling up and becoming an increasingly vexing issue for local governments. As many plastics slowly degrade over time, potentially harmful byproducts that endanger public health are released into the environment.

Most children Connor’s age aren’t fully aware of the hazards posed by plastics or a viable solution: biodegradable, compostable packaging and food service products. Fortunately for Oakwood, Connor was concerned about this issue. He went to his principal, Dan Weckstein, who was supportive of his concerns. Mr. Weckstein suggested that Connor work with Laura Wahl, Oakwood’s cafeteria manager, on the matter. Laura was enthusiastic about the opportunity to improve the sustainability of her cafeteria operation.

Connor found a local “green” technology company, BioGreenChoice, that manufactures biodegradable and compostable food service products and arranged a meeting between BioGreenChoice and Laura. BioGreenChoice products, made from sugarcane and cornstarch, when composted completely degrade into their natural organic components within six months. After working closely with BioGreenChoice, Oakwood started using biodegradable, compostable disposable food service products, including plates, cups, bowls, and flatware.

BioGreenChoice is excited about this launch, as it was initiated by the efforts of a concerned student to make our schools and community greener and more sustainable.

“Thanks to Connor Morris and BioGreenChoice, we are in the first steps in making Oakwood a “greener’ community. I’m hoping other schools/business will follow in going ‘green.’ The products are of outstanding quality and we are excited to do business with BioGreenChoice,” Laura Wahl, food Service Manager at Oakwood High School said.

BioGreenChoice manufactures high quality biodegradable and compostable food service disposables and food packaging products for use in schools, hospitals, corporate cafeterias, restaurants, etc. BioGreenChoice products are made from annually renewable resources like sugarcane, corn etc. and sustainable alternatives to plastics and Styrofoam.

“We are very thankful for the opportunity to be serving Oakwood Schools and to be a part of their sustainable programs. We truly appreciate Connor Morris and his effort to make our community greener and making our BioGreenChoice venture enjoyable,” Heena Rathore, President of BioGreenChoice Corp. http://www.biogreenchoice.com
