Good for Those Who Are in a Position to Start an In-Home Daycare

I think this book would be especially helpful for individuals who already have the means to start an in-home daycare. The sections I found most useful were those on managing behaviors you might expect to encounter while operating a daycare. I have my master’s degree in teaching and found this book provided sound advice for interaction with young children. Financial roadblocks prevented me from started my own business, but if you’ve already got your finances in a row, this book would give you some more insight into implications of running your own daycare out of your home.

Love the Guidance Section

I have been going to my local public library to borrow books on exploring the possibility of starting a home-based day care business. I have read many books, and each book has its unique value to offer on the subject.
Although I appreciated the Windows-formatted CD that came with Start & Run a Home Daycare (Self-Counsel Press Business Series) and the 25-day schedule of activities that came with Start Your Own at Home Child Care Business, 1e, I really loved the guidance section in Steelsmith’s book.
For example, Steelsmith covers:
“Communication Techniques that Help Children Behave” and supplies you with tips for
1. Active Listening (“milk is for drinking, not for spilling” and “when someone spills milk on my carpet, I feel very mad, because I have to clean it up” or “boy, you feel read mad that you can’t have juice. But remember, milk is for drinking, not for spilling.”)
2. I-Messages, such as the second quoted statement in item #1.
3. A Better Way – stating your way is to…, my way is to…, what’s a better way? — this helps to minimize power struggles and create a problem-solving standpoint from which to launch toward solutions that help the child feel empowered to make better choices. What a way to go for child-proofing in advance in the face of peer pressure or authoritarian figures!
Steelsmith goes further with ways to increase good behavior, decrease difficult behavior, and how to foster good social skills.Read more ›
