More Nurses Are Going Into Specialty Fields

January 27, 2012 (Powerhomebiz.com) Many nurses are turning to correctional facilities and mental health facilities for employment and some are becoming forensic nurses. Nurses already in these fields love their jobs and often describe them as very challenging at times but also very rewarding.

Now is the time for you to make the career change if you were thinking about it. The pay is better in some instances and the pace is often less hectic than that found on the typical hospital’s nursing staff. NurseGroups.com provides all the necessary details about career advancement, educational requirements, and working conditions in its online database of all things nursing.

One nurse in a correctional facility said that she loves the autonomy. She loves the fact that she can make medical decisions and does not have a doctor to answer to. She says most of the prisoners were grateful that she was there because many of them have never really had healthcare before. However, she said that she has been threatened on occasion by inmates but she just reminded them of the consequences if they acted on anything

Nurses in correctional facilities treat everything from athlete’s foot to stab wounds. They sometimes also come across rare diseases that they normally wouldn’t find in the public hospital setting because many inmates have lived high risk lifestyles that include abusing drugs and alcohol, poor living conditions and chronic lack of medical attention.

Forensic nursing is a whole different animal. Forensic nurses have to collect evidence from bodies both dead and alive for crimes that were committed – crimes like sexual assault and rape. In these cases, the nurse will collect evidence such as bodily fluids, skin tissues, hair samples, and whatever else they may find.

InovaFairfaxPhotoShoot forensic nurse will also take pictures of the victim to record evidence such as bruises, contusions and cuts. In cases of suspicious death or outright murder, the forensic nurse will work right along with the pathologist or coroner to collect any evidence that can be used in a trial. The forensic nurse will sometimes work with police officers, too, to help solve crimes and may be called for witness or expert testimony in court trials.

Nurses in mental health facilities face a different set of challenges as well as rewards. Mental health facility nurses deal with patients that are diagnosed with anything from bi-polar disorder to schizophrenia to patients suffering from extensive mental or physical disabilities.

Nurses in mental health facilities do more than just distribute medications. They also assist the patients with daily living skills such as bathing, eating, dressing, spiritual care and even listening to their concerns. This is also a very rewarding field because the mental health nurses often see the patients getting better as a direct result of their care for the patient.

Nurses in mental health facilities will also act as important liaisons between the patient, the patient’s family, and their physicians.

These positions are only a small part of specialty nursing. There are so many other fields of specialty nursing that may be of interest to. Interested in learning more? Go to NurseGroups.com to see if there is something there that interests you. More and more nurses are leaving the hospitals and the doctors’ offices for jobs at correctional facilities, mental health facilities and forensic nursing.
