Using Visual Imagery In A Newsletter

May 31, 2012 (Powerhomebiz.com) You have been printing and distributing your newsletters for a few years now, let’s say, and you never get much feedback the way you think you deserve. You know people are getting them, because you don’t get many returns from the post office. But no one ever calls your office and tells you that they really like such and such an article. No one writes or calls to praise or compliment; if you get something wrong, you know you’ll hear from them.

conquestgraphics Maybe your newsletter just lacks that special punch that makes people sit up and take notice when it arrives. After all, in this day and age, you are competing against so many other types of media, all of them screaming for your attention. Perhaps you haven’t been too concerned about this issue simply because you have a built in audience: they are interested in your newsletter because they are interested in your organization. Nevertheless, you want more than that; you want genuine enthusiasm, and revising your newsletter may be just the way to do it.

If you are not employing this idea, you should be: people who are interested in an organization are interested in the people in that organization. How many photos are you including? Are they still shots, group shots, action shots?

The idea we encourage you to do is to try telling your story in a series of photos. See if it’s possible to tell the story without any words or text at all. That way the reader becomes totally absorbed in the feature: she has to work to figure out what’s going on. It could be a much more satisfying reading experience than simply telling the entire story and having a few photos accompanying the story. In essence, it forces the reader to piece together everything that your story is trying to tell.

Your full service printing company can produce a newsletter for you which include high quality photos on high gloss paper. This choice will make your photo story really stand out.

Obviously not every feature of your newsletter can be this high flying. But what you want to avoid if at all possible is photography which resembles still life. People standing in a row or in a group makes for a good record in the sense that you can identify the lineup of individuals, but it doesn’t really make for a particularly interesting shot. Having people in a combination of standing and sitting positions, or walking side by side or sitting around a table as if in a conference – all of these approaches make your organization seem more lifelike.

People do enjoy reading your newsletter – that’s why they subscribe to it. But they want to see visuals of genuine interest and, working with a professional full service printer, you can give them what they want

Come to think about it, those newsletters that you’re talking about are pretty much like blogs. If they don’t have an image, they’ll be no more than a wall of text; you know how people react whenever they come across those kinds of stuff. When there’s an image, they’ll be a lot more curious and read on. Since I mentioned blogs, these images can be used to take advantage of being able to make your site visible in the search results. I know this doesn’t completely relate to newsletters, but an SEO reseller would take advantage of the power of the alt attribute for on-page images.
